Michael Hutchence and Paula Yate’s love affair was embroiled in scandal and ended in tragedy.
But four days before the INXS frontman’s suicide in 1997 at the age of 37, he revealed that he wanted to marry the British presenter.
‘To be honest, yes,’ the Australian rocker told the Herald Sun.

‘I think there is a part of me that truly wants that. But in reality, we haven’t even discussed it…Marriage is a very personal thing and to deny it, well, you don’t want to deny it because it sounds like you don’t want to do it.’
The couple met in 1985 after Paula interviewed him on The Tube, but she was still married to Bob Geldof – the father of her three children.
Calling Geldof ‘an evil man,’ Hutchence vowed that one day the truth about the love triangle would emerge.
‘It is an easy contrast. A convenient one. Saint Bob and (a) wild boy rock star. You pick the one who people are going to believe?’ Michael said.
‘One day, the truth will be told…The ones who lie should be made to tell the truth.’
After Yates divorced the Live Aid concert promoter, she and Michael had one daughter Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence.
However, Paula succumbed to her heroin addiction in 2000 and Tiger Lily – now 17 – was adopted by Geldof in 2007.
‘I have dealt with many demons in my life,’ the New Sensation singer said.
‘But nothing compares to what I’ve had to face over the past few years…It would be so easy for me to say that I hate what I’ve become, but then, what I’ve become, certainly in the public eye, I’ve had no control over.’
Hutchence continued: ‘People should just remember: I am a musician. I am a singer. That’s it. I’m not complaining about the life I’ve got. I’m a dad, I sing, I travel, I get into most of the clubs for free. I have freedom and freedom gives you a certain amount of power. I can lose all of this whenever I want to.’
The Need You Tonight hitmaker’s band is back on the charts thanks, in part, to the two-part miniseries airing Sunday night on Australia’s Channel 7.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Best Of INXS greatest hits album originally released in 2011 has soared to number four.
And the Australian rock band’s 1988 single Never Tear Us Apart placed at number 45 this week.
INXS – whose final album was called Elegantly Wasted – scored three Grammy nods and sold more than 30 million records worldwide, including No 1 hits in four countries.
